Itaily Harris was born June 19, 1914 (on Juneteenth) to the late John and Ellen Atwood of Austin, Texas (Onion Creek). She was one of twelve children born to this union. She has been a lifelong resident of Austin, Texas. She was married to the late Leon Harris. Itaily professed a belief in Christ at an early age. She has been a member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church for over 70 years, where she actively served. She had many fond memories of the 130yrs history of St. Stephen Church. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by any reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Psalms 90:10 (KJV) But by the grace of God she lived to be 102 years. In ten decades of living she saw lots of changes in this world. Can you imagine a little farm girl who attended a one room school house, being able to witness and remember the Roaring 20’s; Two World Wars; Newly invention of telephone to its modern evolution to a cell phone, automobiles and so much more. She lived and was employed through the Jim Crow era of segregation. She was worked as a nannie at the State of Texas Governor’s Mansion for many years and retired from housekeeping from the University of Texas. At the age of 94 she cast her vote for Barack Obama, the first African-American President of the United States. She enjoyed her travels to California, Hawaii, Mexico and other parts of the country to be with grandchildren and family. Four children, Helen Johnson, Barbara Williams (Johnny), Hattie Sugg (Willie), James Harris, Leon Harris, Jr. (Deceased). 11 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren, 35 Great-Great Grandchildren, 1Great-Great-Great Grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
