El’Joan was the first of two children born to Joanna Frances Wills and Eldrige Marcey Cooper, in Mexia, Texas on January 18, 1935. As a child her family lived in Seguin, Austin, Abilene and Midland, Texas. A lover of music El’Joan played the piano and in school played alto saxophone with award winning bands. She sang with Woodson High School Traveling Choir of Abilene, Texas. She graduated from Carver High School in Midland, Texas after attending other High Schools in Abilene and Austin, Texas. After graduation from Carver High School El’Joan attended Houston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas for two years. She married the love of her life, Airman Jim Smith, and his career led to them living in many states through-out the country. El’Joan accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized by her grandfather, Reverend John Aaron Wills. In California she participated with the AME Choirs of Southern California and was a devoted member of the church. She was also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority along with other community organizations. She was a pillar in the community whose life showed her devotion to the Lord. El’Joan was a beautiful mother, wife, and teacher to all. Her family was the most important thing, and she imprinted those same beliefs and values into others throughout her life. She was everyone’s second mother in the neighborhood and community because of her unwavering support she provided. Her beauty, love, nurture, and wisdom touched many lives. El’Joan’s love for education led to her working at the La Sierra High School in California, where she retired after for 20+ years of dedicated service. . She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother . El’Joan leaves to cherish her memories her Sibling: Hattie Jo Grandberry; Children: Deborah Davis, John Smith, Joanna Alexander, and Jim Smith Jr.; Grandchildren: Eric Bailey, Joanna Beamon, Troy McPeak, Antonio Ward, Terese McPeak, Charlotte Smith, Jim Smith III, Jelani Smith, Ryland Smith, and Madison Smith; Great Grandchildren: Khalil Bailey, Kordell Beamon, Kasonde Luchembe, Troy McPeak Jr., Aaliyah McPeak, Noah McPeak, Amaya McPeak, and Bella Bailey; and Great-Great Grandchildren: 2 boys. .
