She was the fourth of seven children born to this union. Barbara was baptized in 1955 at St. James United Methodist Church in Beaumont, Texas, where she was a faithful member until she married the love of her life, the late Reverend Samuel Frank McCreary Jr., on December 20, 1967. To this blessed union, three sons were born: Samuel F. McCreary III, Talmadge A. McCreary, and James M. McCreary. Work Journey Barbara graduated in 1963 from Hebert High School in Beaumont, TX. She earned an Associate Degree from Lamar University and began her professional journey with the Texas Agricultural Department. She played a vital role in the Nutrition Program, providing education and support to individuals with limited income in Beaumont, TX. Additionally, she served as a Nutritionist at Baptist Hospital, demonstrating her dedication to helping others live healthier lives. Later, Barbara pursued further education in Lamar University’s Substance Abuse Counseling Program, which equipped her to work compassionately at the Franklin House, where she supported individuals struggling with substance abuse. Her career reflected her deep care for others and her commitment to making a difference in her community. Spiritual Journey Barbara was a God-fearing woman with an unwavering faith in the Lord. She and her husband, Samuel, were long-standing members of the Universal Church of the Living God under Pastor Joseph Barnes’ leadership for over 25 years. Their spiritual journey later led them to New Bethel Baptist Church in Cheek, Texas, under Pastor Robert Slaughter. When Pastor Slaughter founded The Lord’s Way Baptist Church, the McCrearys transitioned to that ministry, where they served faithfully. After Pastor Slaughter’s passing, Samuel became interim pastor, continuing the family’s legacy of faith. Following the death of her beloved husband of 53 years, Barbara prayerfully united with Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained an active member until her transition to eternal rest. Barbara loved attending church every Sunday, finding joy and purpose in worship and fellowship. She instilled these same spiritual disciplines in her children and grandchildren, ensuring that faith remained a cornerstone of the McCreary family. Home Journey Barbara deeply loved her family and cherished every moment with them. Known for her grace, poise, and impeccable fashion sense, she was always well-dressed and carried herself with dignity. Her love for her children and grandchildren was unparalleled, and she took great pride in their lives and accomplishments. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Henry Bennett Jr. and Bruce Bennett, and her devoted husband, Reverend Samuel Frank McCreary Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her three sons: Samuel F. McCreary III of Beaumont, TX; Talmadge A. McCreary of Beaumont, TX; and Minister James M. McCreary of Richmond, VA. She is also survived by her siblings: Patsy Bennett Strong of Virginia Beach, VA; Constance Bennett-Pollard (Hank) of Beaumont, TX; June Marie Bennett of Washington, DC; and Harold Bennett (Maudry) of New Iberia, LA. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Samantha McCreary of Houston, TX; Samuel McCreary IV, Elizabeth McCreary, Caleb McCreary, and Karson McCreary. Barbara is also fondly remembered by her niece, Patrice Allen (Tyrone) of Virginia Beach, VA; nephews Garrett Hornsby of London, England, and Melvin Bennett of Los Angeles, CA; and her great-nieces, Kala Allen Omeiza (Dr. Daniel Omeiza) and Dr. Tavia Allen Kelly (Jack Kelly), and great-nephew, Terrence J. Allen. She also leaves behind one great-great-nephew. Barbara’s faith, love for her family, and unwavering devotion to God’s word leave a legacy that will inspire generations. Her family and all who knew her will miss her dearly but take comfort in knowing she is now in the presence of the Lord she so deeply loved. “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” – Matthew 25:23
