Mildred Beatrice Wheeler entered this world on June 16, 1926 in Taylor, Texas as the sixth (6th) of ten (10) children born to Oscar & Seawilla (Green) Wheeler. Mildred’s hope in Christ was formed at a young age. At six (6) years old, she was baptized at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Taylor, Texas by the late Reverend M. L. Polk. She started her Christian journey by serving as a member of the Choir, Usher Board, Sunday School and A. C. E. (Allen Christian Endeavor) League; and continued by attending Revivals, Sunday School Conventions, Vacation Bible School and Gospel Musicals. Her days always included prayers, devotional readings and Bible reading. In 1960,under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend B. L. McCormick, she joined Grant Chapel A. M.E. Church (NKA—Grant A. M. E. Worship Center) and remained a faithful member until her health slowed her down. She was a member of the E. B. Scott Women’s Missionary Society. When you have the love of Jesus in your heart as Mildred did, your love for other people will always illuminate their life. The light in her heart not only shone for her church family but also her friends and classmates. She kept them close always. Mildred, known to her siblings as “Pie,” loved to entertain and cook. She carried on lifelong relationships and friendships with her relatives, neighbors and classmates. The pleasure of cooking that she enjoyed as her livelihood started at Dickey’s Clinic and continued with the Austin Independent School District, where she retired after forty-two (42) years there. Those who preceded her heavenly departure were her parents: Oscar and Seawilla Wheeler; two brothers: James A. Coleman and William A. Wheeler; four sisters: Callie M. Palmer, Ruby E. Wheeler, Jessica M. Cargill and Addie L. Murry; and one niece: Charlotte Roberts Fowler. Sweetest memories of “Pie” will be cherished by her sisters: Earlene F. Jones and Erma G. Wheeler; her brother: Oscar L. Wheeler II; three nephews: James Coleman II (Gloria), (Converse, Texas), Thomas B. Wheeler, Oscar Wheeler III (Anna); seven nieces: Barbara Y. Brown (James) (Houston, Texas), Edwina D. Kizzee (Oscar), Jennifer D. Harvey (John) (Charleston, S. C.), Valerie D. Murry, Jocelyn V. Adams (Robert) (Boston, MA), Edith M. Murry, Lisa R. Murry (Temple, Texas); one God daughter: Cherie Wilson (Larry); grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
