At a young age, she was an active member of Providence Baptist Church. She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church of Belton, Texas prior to relocating with her daughters. She attended Riverside Elementary and Middle School in Gonzales, Texas. At Edwards High School, she began dazzling crowds as a drum major. Maxine married her high school sweetheart, George Dowell Steen. She was blessed to have three kids, Trevinia (Missy), Rodney (Man) and Cheryle. In adulthood she relocated to Austin where she was a nurse’s aide at Seton and several other nursing facilities. She Continued work as a healthcare provider in the private home health sector. She also shared a union with Henry Drummer. Maxine had a true passion for music and performing. She sang lead and background vocals. She graced the stage with several different acts including but not limited to BB King, Betty Wright, Great Wolf, Beverly Houston, Magnificent Seven, OSGs, Aristocrats, Freedom Machine, Bionic Soul, Soul Epathaa, and The Greathouse Mix. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn Demerson, brotherin law Eddie Bookman, son Rodney Steen, nephew Gregory Lee, Grandson Donell Cooper Jr, and goddaughter Kathryn Hodges. She leaves to Cherish her memory: Lifelong Partner, Robert Johnson. Daughters; Trevinia (Donell) Cooper, Cheryle (Leroy) Brooks and Daughter in Law; Yvette Steen. Grandchildren; Trenton (Allison) Steen, Kasey Brooks, Ta’Ron Ward, Ra’Shon (Sheena) Ward, Angela Cooper, Kiondra Washington, Yvondra Steen, Terrell Thomas, Cayla Cooper, Alegra Brooks. Great Grandchildren; Jaida and London Stovall, Ta’Ron Ward Jr, Hendrix Ward, Jaxon Ward, Tyrin Thomas, Trenton Steen Jr, sisters: Rosemary Bookman, Gwendolyn Allen, brothers: Ernest (Dawn) Flowers III, Danny (Ella) Flowers, Rickie Flowers, brother in law, Otis Demerson. Lifelong friends: Diane Monroe, Kathy Smith, Catherine Roland and Jackie Dorsey along with a host of other family and friends.
