The family moved to Austin, TX, where Maurice attended and graduated from L.C. Anderson Senior High School. Mrs. Owens was married to Mr. Samuel C. Owens Sr. She received Christ at an early age as a member of the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in the historic Clarksville community. There she served as the Church Secretary. In the late 1950s she moved her family to Compton, California, where she continued to raise her six kids. In 1968 she returned to Austin and joined the St. James Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board for over fifty years. She also was active with the Mission and Senior Saints Choir. She was also active locally in The Order of the Eastern Star. Maurice landed a job as a custodian for the Travis State School shortly after relocating to Austin. She started in an entry-level position, but due to her innate leadership qualities she soon became a supervisor, then a manager and ultimately the Director of Housekeeping. She was the first Black woman to hold this position, supervising over seventy employees and a six-figure budget. She retired from that position in the summer of 1990. Mrs. Owens enjoyed traveling, bowling, playing dominoes and bingo. She was a devoted mother who would do anything for her children. She is survived by her six children. Gwendolyn “Peaches” Williams, Samuel (Gloria) Owens, Jr., Sandra Kay (Ralph) White, Chester (Rose) Owens, Pastor Ray (Dion) Owens and Andre (Shelia) Owens; along with her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and countless other family and friends.
