February 17, 1933 - September 5, 2018
Loraine Oatis was born February 17, 1933 in Wilmer, Alabama. She was the only child born to Johnnie Davis and Anna Belle Brown. Both preceded her in death. Loraine was educated in the Mobile Alabama school system. She was baptized at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Mobile and married Redemus Oatis on May 21, 1950 in Mobile. To this union five children were born Deborah, Milton, Princess, Jacqueline and Ronald. Redemus, Milton and Princess have preceded her in death. The family traveled to various locations with the US Army and moved to Detroit in 1959. She began her working career as a cook at the LaSalle Nursing home Detroit. Not being satisfied with just cooking, she attended Oakland Community and Wayne County Community colleges and earned certification to be a dietitian. She began working for the state in that capacity at the Detroit House Of Corrections and retired after 20 years in 1995. During her working years and in retirement she was always known to be a woman of dignity and strength. She loved to travel, play cards and other games. She was the ultimate hostess opening her home to family and friends serving delicious food on most weekends and holidays. She used to have cooking contests with her husband and the children were the judges. She was a great conversationalist, had a great sense of humor and loved family. She would travel to locations for her children and grandchildren to attend graduations, weddings and other functions. She and her husband were long time members of Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in the choir and a member of the usher board. They later joined Third New Hope Baptist Church in April 2011, under the leadership of Dr. E.L. Branch. She truly loved her Pastor and was faithful until her health began to decline. Her favorite scripture was Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” Loraine departed this life Wednesday, September 5, 2018. She leaves to celebrate the memories of her life and legacy: her daughter Deborah Oatis-Sams (Bobby) of Round Rock Texas, Jacqueline Sanders of Detroit, Ronnie Oatis (Angela) of Detroit and two granddaughters Jennifer Oatis (Lavon) of Detroit and Andrese Hancock (Stanley) Tempe Arizona, seven granddaughters, two grandsons, three great grandsons, and three great granddaughters and a host of relatives and friends.
