Josephine was the oldest of eight born to this union. Josephine attended Salem Elementary School, Salem Middle School and for 10th grade she moved with family and attended Crystal City High School where she graduated. She went on to attend St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas where she completed 2 years of schooling. Josephine gave her life to Lord at an early age and served as a devoted member of St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church, Rosanky, Texas and Austin, Texas. Throughout her life Josephine devoted much of her time to work of the Lord in the church, community and caring for her family. Josephine had a big loving and caring heart she was a true servant of the Lord. She worked as a Caregiver in nursing homes and a Childcare Director she was also the Lead Supervisor in housekeeping for a large hotel chain Josephine’s hands were always busy helping others. Her heart to help others was the way she provided for her family. Family was most important to Josephine so much so that she resigned from her job to take care of family. The birth of her first grandchild Keith was also the birth of her becoming an entrepreneur. Josephine went to pick up her grandson Keith from daycare and she was very upset at the condition her precious grandson was in. So much so that on her way to the car, she called her daughter Diane, Keith’s mother and told her, “My grandson will not be coming back here”. That was his last day at that daycare and her first day as a business owner. She went on to start Little Beginners a registered home daycare. Josephine continued in childcare helping to raise her other grandchildren and a host of other children. She did this for over to 20 years until her health begin to decline. Josephine also took her mother Ida Mae and her Aunt Josephine in her home and took care of them until they transitioned to be with the Lord. Josephine mothered 3 beautiful children Stevie, Diane and Crystal. Josephine fell in love and has been happily married to her husband Freddie Ray Upton for 40 years. Freddie has been a loving and devoted husband and stepfather. He stayed by her side until she made her transition to be with the Lord. Josephine was preceded in death by her mother and father William and Ida Mae Haywood, brothers Shadrock and Carol Haywood. Josephine leaves to mourn her loving and devoted husband Freddie Ray Upton, her children Stevie L. Haywood, Sr. (Amanda), Diane C. Simmons (David) and Crystal A. Johnson. Her grandchildren Waymon (Keith) Eason, Jr., Dy’Eisha C. Eason, Daytron J. Pool, Dominique J. Alexander, Crysalyn A. Bates, Bryanna M. Bates, Stevie L. Haywood Jr, Tahtiana Caldwell-Simmons and 10 great grandchildren. Her loving siblings William L. Haywood, Jr. (Ollie May), Alean Mathis (George) Jo Mae Williams (Lawrence), Ray Charles Haywood, Vanessa Williams (Derrick), Halley Tolbert (Verna) and Major Tolbert (Cynthia) and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
