James attended Barefield Schools in Refugio. He later entered the military on March 1, 1946 to serve his country in the United Stated Armed Forces – Army branch of service. James was baptized at an early age and later in life became an ordained deacon in the Baptist Church. He was a faithful member of Ephphatha Baptist Church now Fresh Impact Christian Church where he served as a deacon until his health failed him. James Avery retired from the City of Austin after working in the Animal Control Department over the span of 25 years. James was an entrepreneur extraordinaire owning several clubs in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. He was also the CEO of James Avery Hauling and Lawn Service for over 40 years. He did not stop operating his lawn service business until he was in his late 80’s. James was a hard worker and loved his birthday gatherings with family. James Leon Avery “The Legend” leaves a host of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, relatives, and friends to cherish his memory.
