October 26, 1933 - August 21, 2018
Erma Grace Wheeler was born October 26, 1933 to the late Oscar and Swewilla Green Wheeler in Taylor, Texas. Grace grew up in Taylor, Texas with 9 other siblings. Two brothers; James and William; Five sisters; Callie Mae, Jessica Marie, Ruby Earnestine, Mildred Beatrice and Addie Louise have already transitioned to that heavenly home prepared for God’s children. Grace graduated from O.L. Price High School, Taylor, Texas; Huston-Tillotson (College) University, Austin, Texas; and Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View Texas. She extended her graduate studies at Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Texas Christian University, Ft. Worth, Texas. As a child, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Taylor, Texas. She actively served in the Choir, Sunday School, Allen Christian Endeavor (A.C.E.) League and special pageants and programs. Later, as a young adult, she transferred her membership to Grant Chapel AME Church, Austin, Texas. She didn’t miss a Sunday of worshipping-she joined Grant Chapel the very next Sunday after moving from Allen Chapel. At Grant, Grace was an avid member of the Inspirational Choir, the Tenth Episcopal District Choir and the E.B. Scott Women’s Missionary Society where she chaired many programs and projects. It was not uncommon for her to travel to meetings and General Conferences to assist with campaigns and pageants being organized by friends from Grant Chapel as well as friends from other AME churches throughout the 5th and 10th districts. Grace’s work experience included 2 years at Dickey’s Clinic, 4 years at Holy Cross Hospital and 34+ years at Austin Independent School District. She taught 3rd and 4th grades and immensely enjoyed her career there. Memories numerous and precious will be cherished by: a loving and devoted daughter, Dr. Jocelyn Sargent-Adams (Robert); one sister, Earlene Freeman Jones; one brother, Oscar L. Wheeler; two grandsons, Jerald and Thomas-Lee; six nieces, Barbara Brown (James), Edwina Kizzee (Oscar) Jennifer Harvey (John), Valerie Murry, Edith Murry and Lisa Murry; three nephews, James Coleman (Gloria), Thomas Wheeler and Oscar L. Wheeler III (Anna); five grand nieces, Angela Kizzee, Bethan Harvey-Rucker (Todd), Cydney Murry, Regina and Rosalie Wheeler; seven grand nephews, James Brown, Shawn Brown, Leonard Roberts (Ericka), Oscar Wheeler IV, Romeo and Isaiah Wheeler; three great-grandnieces, Michaela Roberts, Makenzie Roberts and Beatrice Rucker; a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
