William “Smitty” Smith was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Ike Harris and Leola Smith on November 11, 1956. He was a man whose presence lit up any room and whose voice had a way of drawing people in. From Baltimore, his journey led him through Dallas before he made Austin his home. It was here that his work, much like his life, became a reflection of purpose and resilience. He began his professional journey with Greyhound Bus Company, navigating long roads with the same grit and determination that shaped his character. He later joined Capital Metro in Austin and eventually started his own defensive driving school. His instruction served a wide range of students, including those with special needs, and reflected his steady hand and commitment to helping others gain independence. He lived a vibrant life with many passions. Whether playing racquetball, traveling, working on his farm, instructing, or driving any type of vehicle, he gave it his all. He was a beloved radio DJ on KAZI known as DJ Re’al, where his segment of ‘The Quiet Storm’ became a community favorite. He was also an active member of the Austin Capital City Lions Club, always finding ways to serve and stay connected. His words carried weight, and his advice—solicited or not—was always heartfelt. He was a people person in every way. He never met a stranger and never sat still unless it was for a good nap or a TV show. In 1992, he married the love of his life, Jacqueline Mackey Smith. Their bond was steadfast and deeply rooted in love. To this union, two children were born: son Trevor Jibrie Smith and daughter Janae A. Smith. He was a proud and devoted father to four children: Nickia “Angel” Jenkins, William Re’al Smith, Trevor Jibrie Smith, and Janae A. Smith. His face would gleam with pride whenever he spoke about them and their accomplishments. He is welcomed into eternity by his Father, Ike Harris and mother, Leola Smith. Cherishing his memory are: his devoted wife Jacqueline Smith; his sister Virginia Williams of Maryland, his children Nickia (Terry) Jenkins of Maryland, William Re’al Smith of Ohio, Trevor Jibrie Smith, and Janae A. Smith. He is lovingly remembered by his grandson, Daniel Jenkins; and granddaughters Kaydence Alannah Martinez and Nevaeh “Princess” Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and treasured friends. He was a constant, loving force in the lives of those around him, a protector to the core. His legacy lives on in the laughter, love, and stories shared by all who knew him.
