James, Jr. Sunrise: December 5, 1971 Sunset: February 22, 2026 Leonard D. James, Jr., affectionately known as “Tiger,” was born on December 5,1971, to Leonard D. James, Sr. and Kathy L. James. He was the first born of their union. Leonard accepted Christ at an early age at True Light Missionary Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, where he was actively involved in Sunday School and the Royal Ambassadors. As an adult, he later joined Great Works Baptist Church (G.W.B.C.), under the leadership of his father, Pastor Leonard D. James, Sr. Leonard faithfully worked alongside his father in the development of the church’s seven-acre property and recently assisted with improvements to the church grounds. He was passionate about reaching people beyond the church walls, sharing his faith and the power of prayer with all he encountered. Leonard was the proud owner of L.J. Transport, LLC. He was an avid fisherman whose upbeat personality and warm spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He traveled the world, but most of all, Leonard was a devoted family man. He loved his family deeply and treasured every moment spent together. Affectionately known as “Papi” to his grandchildren, Leonard spent countless hours playing, guiding, and laughing with them. Being “Papi” brought him great joy, and he embraced that role with love and pride. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Catherine Johnson and Deacon Edward and Rosa Doyle. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents, Leonard and Kathy James; his children, De’ Jaunique James and Tierra Brown; and his beloved grandchildren: Darius Deshawn Brooks, Da’Rius Dejawn Brooks, De’Ari De’Shawna Brooks, Erest Jo’Lynn Scott, Jaliyah Denae Turner, and Tatum Douglas Turner. He is also survived by his three sisters, Tonya James-Allen (William), Bernetta Gratten (Richard), and Tina Gash (Wilton); a host of god-siblings; his chosen brother, Andre Silvera; his close-knit brother-cousins, Cedric Muhammad, Robert Muhammad, Charles Bender, Sr., Larry Walker, and Anthony Doyle Sr; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends. Leonard’s life, faith, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
