A time to be born, and a time to die. Derek Tyrone Washington was born on October 9, 1986 and received his heavenly wings on Friday, May 26, 2023. Derek was born at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, Texas. He was a bundle of joy, truly a celebration in the lives of his parents Gerard and Jeanette Washington and their families. He was baptized at Hope Lutheran Church in Austin, TX Later he dedicated his life to the Lord at God’s Power Church, Austin, TX. As a youth, Derek attended services at various churches in the Austin area and was always actively involved in their music ministries through singing and playing the guitar. Derek began his education at Hope Lutheran Elementary School and then continued his education in Austin I.S.D. schools. He was accepted into the Fine Art Academy’s Classical Guitar Program at McCallum High School. This program was sponsored and run by Austin Classical Guitar Society. Derek would complete his formal education at Texas State Technical College in Waco, TX where he focused on musical sound mixing. Music was always a major part of his life. Derek was a songwriter who routinely performed his music at “Kick Butt Coffee”, special occasions and other local music venues. Derek was constantly working on numerous musical projects until the time of his death. While music was Derek’s passion, playing pool was his game! This guitar playing dude was an awesome pool player. He won several local pool tournament trophies and he and his team qualified to participate in an international pool tournament in Las Vegas, NV. Trying to make a living as a musician or pool player was difficult. Derek would take on many tasks that allowed him to earn his own way. He worked as a lawn maintenance technician, a job that he enjoyed. He was very proud of the contribution he made to the beautification of the environment through his work. Music may have been Derek’s passion and while he was a skilled pool player (he certainly enjoyed maintaining the environment) his true pride and joy was his son, Izerek! Derek and Izerek were more than father and son, they were Best Buddies. They had a special spiritual relationship. Izerek’s eyes lit up when he heard or saw his dad coming! Derek always kept his son near to protect him from all potential dangers! Derek was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Andrew, Sr. and Lillian Ryan, Clifford Taylor and paternal grandparents, Robbin Edwin, Sr. and Dolly Washington. Left to cherish Derek’s memory is his son, Izerek Edwin Washington and his former wife, Shunetra Kincheon, Dereks parents, Gerard and Jeanette Washington, and his older brothers, Robert and Marlon Wilturner. He leaves one niece Jazmine Wilturner and the Wilturner nephews, Andrew, Christopher, Darrius, Brandon, Nicholas, and Michael and one great nephew Makyah Rivers. He also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and his friends. Derek is now resting in the arms of God HE who loved him best. We were blessed to share thirty-six years of life with Derek!
