Charles Smith

Psalm 84:10 Obituary Charles Willie Smith was born on August 16, 1945, in Austin, Texas, to Stella B. Hardin Smith and Willie B. Smith. After graduating from L. C. Anderson High School, Charles joined the Army and Army Reserves where he attained the ranking of Staff Sargent and earned the accommodation of Marksman (M-1 Rifle). He continued his travels to California where he resided for many years before returning to Austin. There, Charles became a licensed CDL operator of 18-wheeler trucks and a Field Supervisor for the City of Austin, retiring after more than 20 years of service. Charles was a bar-b-que master, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and canning preserves. In 1975, he married the love of his life, Burnsteen Roberson. Together they reared three children; Dana Jerrod, Tina Nicole, and Christopher Charles. Charles was a devoted husband, father, and a great provider; he taught his children the values of self-worth, leadership, commitment, hard work, and time management. His being humble, kind, and straight forward were three of his most amazing attributes that he shared with all whom he encountered. Charles joined church at an early age and has been a faithful and active member of St. James for more than 46 years. As a Senior Usher, he took extreme pride in serving with “pomp and circumstance,” leading the ushers in the service of God. Charles used the bible as a roadmap to prepare himself for his “journey” through daily devotions, being an avid reader of the Bible, great biblical conversation, and as a loyal participant of bible study. These acts contributed to the further development of his relationship with God. On Sunday, November 10, 2019, Charles Willie Smith was called home to the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Pearl Hodge and Carolyn Smith, and brothers Marvin Berry and Johnny Roy Smith. Charles leaves in mourning his wife Burnsteen Smith; children Dana Jeroid Jones (Charlia), Tina Nicole Townsend (David), Christopher Charles Smith; grandchildren Nikita Simone Jones, Charla Nanette Jones, Kelvin Jeroid Jones, Danae Ariana Jones, Cameron Elander Townsend and Chance Christopher Smith; great-grandchild Curtis Ethan Townsend; siblings Everette “Blue” Smith (Wilma), Mary Moore (Anthony deceased), Otis Jones (Mary), Robert Earl Smith; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
