Betty Roland was born on April 10, 1957, in Austin, Texas, to the late Willie P. Johnson and Ollie Crittendon. She was one of thirteen children and, from an early age, displayed a strength, love, and determination that would define her life. At a young age, Betty accepted Christ under the leadership of Pastor Ulan Brown. Her faith became the foundation of her life, guiding her every step. Forty-six years ago, Betty met the love of her life, Charles Roland. Both coming from previous marriages, they found in each other a true partner and friend. On December 7, 1991, their devotion was sealed in marriage, and together they raised a blended, beautiful family filled with love, laughter, and unity. Their union was blessed with five children: Rickey (Marie), Fredrick (Frances), Lashon (Eddie), Sherell, and Brenette. Betty’s legacy lives on through her 16 grandchildren and 26 great- grandchildren, all of whom brought her tremendous joy. She was preceded in death by five siblings: Antonio Crittendon, Shirley Jackson, Matthew Williams, Sherry Johnson, and Regional Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Rev. Charles Roland; her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and her beloved siblings: Mary DeShay (Murray DeShay), Mary Garrett (Rev. Robert Garrett), Patricia Strickland (Rev. Larry Strickland), Donald Williams, Ronald Williams, Sherman Johnson (Geneva Johnson), and Algie Grant. Also mourning her passing and celebrating her life is her special mother-in-law, Mrs. Beulah Caesar, whom she loved and respected dearly. Betty was known for her strong faith, her deep love for family, and her incredible resilience. Yet one of her most endearing passions was her love for cleanliness. You could beat Betty at many things, but cleaning was not one of them. It brought her peace, joy, and pride. Even in her final days, her heartfelt wish was to return home—just so she could clean her house. Her life was a living testimony of perseverance, grace, and care. She touched countless lives with her kindness, quiet wisdom, and unwavering devotion. Betty said farewell on August 25, 2025. She will be forever remembered, honored, and deeply missed by all who knew her. As the songwriter reminds us: “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.”
